MUPD police report confirms more details about racial slur on campus

An official report reveals more on what transpired between two groups, leading to claims of racial slurs on campus Tuesday night.

According to the MUPD police report, Legion of Black Collegians members flagged down Officer Jacob Clifford at the corner of Tiger Avenue and Conley Avenue.

The LBC members pointed out a group of individuals walking southbound on Tiger Avenue one block away. Officer Clifford then made contact with the group of individuals at the corner of Tiger Avenue and Rollins Street. The LBC members followed Officer Clifford on foot and arrived with several other people.

After the crowd was dispersed, one of the LBC members told Officer Clifford more about how the incident occurred. The LBC members said that they were walking around Francis Quadrangle after an LBC event. The group of white individuals were also walking in Francis Quadrangle and appeared to be intoxicated, according to the LBC members. They were knocking down trash cans as they walked by the Reynolds Journalism Institute, and that’s when the racial slur was said.

“We determined there was no hate crime that occurred. There was no crime that occurred at all,” said Lt. Kevin Rodgers.

Rodgers explained because the racial slurs weren’t used in a threatening manner, the incident is considered hate speech rather than a hate crime. The Office of Student Conduct and the Title IX office are now investigating the incident.

Rogers said these reports of hate speech on campus are concerning and sometimes hard to investigate.

“A lot of times it comes down to ‘he said, she said.’ We don’t know what people are thinking, we don’t know what biases they have or what leads them to let those out and act out toward another individual.”
