Columbia business announces expansion plans

A Columbia-based safety equipment distributor has announced its plans to expand.

Columbia Safety has acquired a 100,000 square-foot facility at 1391 East Boone Industrial Drive.

The space was last occupied by MITek before the company relocated to the St. Louis area.

Columbia Safety said Monday it plans to renovate he building rather then build a new facility.

Renovation plans include a showroom, a 4,000 square-foot training facility, a 16,000 square-foot office, indoor climbing towers, a 1,500 square-foot employee wellness center and gym, a two-story slide, a film and photography studio, and an employee lounge

The distribution facility will also feature a state-of-the-art warehouse and inventory management system.

It will track and manage stock in the warehouse, as well as analyzing purchasing data.

In a press release, Columbia Safety said it hopes the project helps revitalization efforts in the northern part of the city.

The multimillion-dollar renovation is expected to be completed by early 2017.

Columbia Safety will then move its headquarters from their current location at 1801 Westfall Drive to the renovated building.

The expansion is expected to bring around 50 new jobs to Columbia.
