Man sentenced for assaulting Columbia officer

A man was sentenced for charges stemming from an assault on a Columbia police officer Tuesday.

The court sentenced Andrew Mackey to 15 years in prison for felony assault on an officer, but the sentence was suspended to 5 years probation. Mackey was also ordered to spend 180 days in jail for misdemeanor charges.

The assault happened in downtown Columbia in July 2015 when Mackey kicked the officer in the head.

The officer got a concussion from the altercation. Cell phone footage of the arrest is included above.

Mackey pleaded guilty to the charges this past summer.
