Hurricane Newton will bring heavy rain to Mid-Missouri

Hurricane Newton is the 14th named storm this year for the Eastern North Pacific. It’s been an active year for the Pacific, compared to the eight that the Atlantic has seen.

Newton slammed into Cabo San Lucas on the Baja California Peninsula early Tuesday morning. It hit the area with heavy rain and with winds up to 90 mph.

Newton is the 104th storm to impact the peninsula since the late 1880s. During landfall, Newton knocked out power to several places at one of the top tourist destinations in Mexico. Authorities say that nearly 14,000 tourists are stranded. Thankfully, there have been no reports of deaths or injuries.

The National Hurricane Center says that Newton is slowly weakening as it moves northward through Baja California, but will maintain its strength as a category 1 hurricane. It’s forecast to make a secondary landfall on the Mexico coastline, after crossing back over water in the Gulf of California.

As the storm continues to track to the north, it will likely remain a tropical storm once it enters the United States, bringing heavy rain to a large portion of the country. Thankfully, the winds are expected to diminish the next few days, but the moisture will get tied up in a cold front that is tracking out of Canada.

Due to the slow-moving front, the remnants of Newton will dump upward of 5 inches of rain across central Missouri. This will bring the potential threat for flooding across a large portion of the area.

There is good news though, once the remnants of Newton and the cold front track through Mid-Missouri, we’ll see a decent stretch of weather, with potentially one of the coolest mornings we’ve had in some time.
