Columbia man to be sentenced for role in West Broadway shooting

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Columbia man is set to be sentenced Monday for his role in a shooting along West Broadway in May.

Dequan Hughes, 22, was found guilty of second-degree assault and armed criminal action in early October.

After being found guilty of both charges, the jury recommended a total of three years in prison and five months jail, according to court documents.

Hughes has since filed for a new trial, which is expected to be addressed in court on Monday.

According to records, this incident was Hughes's first offense but due to the nature of the crime and how it occurred in a crowded public area, bond was not given.

Hughes has been in the Boone County Jail since his arrest.

May 10th Shooting

Hughes was one of five men arrested for his involvement in the shooting between two groups along West Broadway on the night of May 10.

According to the Columbia Police Department, the shooting started at the West Broadway Walmart and continued into an area across the street near the Hy-Vee gas station.

After investigating, CPD found a gun in the bushes near the crime scene and eventually saw Hughes' twin brother, DeAngelo D. Hughes approach the bushes. Police arrested DeAngelo on other charges and eventually linked Dequan to the shooting.

Police also arrested Mariquan M. Midgyette and Shaquil T. Midgyette, both of Columbia, for their roles in the shooting.

Gerrod Taylor was also arrested by CPD in connection to the May shooting. He is charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action. He is set to appear in court on Nov. 30.

Taylor was on probation at the time of the West Broadway shooting. He was previously charged with unlawful use of a weapon in 2020 after a shooting at a Juneteenth event at Douglass Park, where one person was shot in the leg.

Taylor pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of unlawful use of a weapon and received 5 years of probation.
