Jamestown man faces murder charges in connection to infant’s death
Update 8/4: Prosecutors have charged Christopher Buxton, 30, with murder after his two-and-a-half-month-old baby boy died at Women’s and Children’s Hospital in Columbia.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol told ABC 17 News Thursday morning it was asked to help in an investigation related to suspected child abuse.
Kyler Buxton, the baby, was being treated at Women’s and Children’s hospital for injuries from multiple occasions. The patrol identified the injuries as “non-accidental trauma.” Kyler died July 30, and his father was arrested by state troopers at his home on August 3. The murder charge was filed the same day as the arrest.
According to court documents, a state trooper was told about Kyler being in the hospital on July 29 by Moniteau County Sheriff Jay Gump. When medics got to Kyler, he was apparently “non-responsive [with] shallow breathing.” Buxton reportedly told authorities it looked like his son was having a seizure of some kind.
At the hospital, doctors determined Kyler had numerous broken bones and was bleeding internally, injuries court documents say are consistent with a child being shaken. The trooper who interviewed Buxton about the injuries said the father acknowledged they weren’t an accident, and that Buxton, his wife, and his roommate were the only ones who could have caused those injuries.
At that point, Buxton told the trooper he knew neither his wife nor roommate hurt the child, but denied causing the injuries himself.
The trooper who interviews Buxton further said text message records from Buxton’s wife’s phone show Buxton had been upset with his having to care for Kyler and that Kyler wouldn’t stop crying.
