Finance reports for Republican state attorney general’s race

One of the races ABC 17 News followed during Tuesday night’s election was the republican nomination for Missouri attorney general.

After conceding, Sen. Kurt Schaefer was asked about the tone of the race.

Schaefer said with two lawyers involved, it can get heated. He also went on to say the amount of money spent may have played a role.

Sen. Kurt Schaefer said, “I think the other thing too is we got out spent by about three to one and when that happens, you get attacked on a lot of fronts.”

ABC 17 News pulled the financial records from the Missouri Ethics Commission for both Schaefer and his opponent, law professor Josh Hawley.

The information was filed eight days before the primary election.

In total, those numbers show Schaefer’s campaign spent nearly $4 million, while the report shows Hawley’s campaign spent just over $2.5 million.

Josh Hawley beat Sen. Kurt Schaefer Tuesday night by collecting 65 percent of the vote.

Hawley will now face Democrat Teresa Hensley for November’s election.
