Residents on Demaret Dr. organize cleanup

Residents on Demaret Drive near east Columbia have organized an area cleanup to try and get rid of the trash littering their streets.

Because Demaret Dr. isn’t technically in Columbia, private companies are responsible to pick up the trash. But some residents are confused on when those companies actually do pick up the trash, leaving residents to leave their trash on the streets for extended periods of time.

The organizers have created a GoFundMe page as well as a Facebook page for the event.

The cleanup officially starts at 10 a.m. and will go until about sundown Sunday.

The organizer for the event says any left over funds collected will go towards a future cleanup for the area.
