Approaching Storm System Will Bring Much Needed Rain to Mid-Missouri Sunday into Monda

A low pressure system moving eastward through Nebraska and Iowa will drag its associated warm and cold fronts through the mid-Missouri region Sunday through Monday afternoon, providing the region with a much needed, wetting rain.

A warm front will begin lifting to the northeast overnight Saturday and through Sunday morning. As it makes its trek through Missouri, light showers will spread northward into areas south and along I-70 after 8am Sunday morning and continue to do so through the early afternoon. By about 1pm, a lull in the shower activity is expected while we are in between fronts, an area of a cyclone known as the “warm sector”.

A second and more convective round of rain will come along a cold front sweeping southward Sunday evening into early Monday morning. Heavier amounts of up to 2 inches of additional rainfall are expected with this wave, with the most rainfall projected to occur south of I-70.

Since January 1st, Columbia Regional Airport has only received a total of 3.68″ of rain. Normally, by this time, Columbia typically sees around 8.24″ of rain, resulting in about a 4.5″ deficit in terms of rainfall amounts. This weekend’s rain will be a welcomed one.
