Mexico city council approves money to replace tornado sirens

City leaders in Mexico have approved the roughly $200,000 needed to replace six tornado sirens in the community.

According to Audrain County Emergency Management Director Steve Shaw, some community members are also raising money to add a tornado siren near the intersection of Highways 54 and 19, next to the Community R-VI school. Shaw tells ABC 17 News he’s been working on this project for almost a year. So far he’s collected around $6,400 and needs about $3,500 more.

Shaw says Ameren will donate installation, and Consolidated Electric will donate the pole for the siren.
