Man charged with multiple crimes after alleged Jefferson City bomb threat

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Cole County prosecutor has charged a Minnesota man with multiple crimes after a Saturday morning incident. He allegedly had a bomb and was trying to get the money he was owed, documents say.

Jefferson City police responded after 9 a.m. Saturday to the 900 block of Jackson Street after Derek Burgin would not leave the victim's front porch where he was demanding money and showed the victim a makeshift bomb, documents say.

Police tried to talk with Burgin, but he was argumentative and talked about assaulting the police, taking an officer's pistol, and forcing the police to shoot him, or he might commit suicide, according to court documents.

Burgin then tried to leave the area but was taken into custody by law enforcement.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol Bomb Squad and the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives investigated the alleged bomb and found it to be a pill bottle wrapped in tape with a fuse.

Burgin is charged with first-degree assault, unlawful possession of a weapon and resisting arrest.

The Cole County Court considers Burgin a flight risk and no bond was given by the court.
