Girl not seriously hurt after getting hit in crosswalk

ABC 17 News confirmed a girl returned to class on Tuesday with no serious injuries after getting hit by a car in a crosswalk near a Jefferson City school.

Police said the victim was elementary-school age. She was crossing Fairgrounds Road Tuesday morning near Lawson Elementary and Edgewood Drive, about 15 minutes west of downtown.

Parents are extremely concerned about their children’s safety after the incident and want to know the protocols for the number of cross guards on duty.

Safety and Security Coordinator for the Jefferson Public Schools, Kurt Mueller, commented on the situation, “It sounded like the student did everything right as far as waiting for the walk sign, and it was a matter of a light turning yellow to red. Luckily, the driver stopped in time before it became a serious incident.

Mueller and the Jefferson City Police Department urge drivers to pay extra special attention to speed limits and stop signs around school perimeters. They also say to continue to educate children on road safety.
