Questions remain after device detonated in Moberly
Questions still remain unanswered after a device was detonated twice in Moberly Monday night.
ABC 17 News first reported a bomb squad detonated an unidentified material from a home on Russhaven Drive.
Authorities said a resident created a material for a hobby that he participates in. He is fully cooperating with authorities in their investigation.
Due to the nature of that material, it was determined that it was in the best interest for the public to destroy it.
As of now, authorities don’t know if they will charge the man with any criminal actions, or hold him financially responsible for all the resources that were used Monday night.
An initial call a month ago led detectives back to the man’s home, and that’s when they found material that was what they call potentially unstable, which would pose a safety hazard.
Experts on the scene decided across from the house in a park would be the safest place to destroy the material.
ABC 17 News asked Moberly Police if this could have been a potential act of terror.
“At this point there doesn’t seem to be any indication this was a kind of threat for domestic terrorism or the word bomb, there is no indication that this is what the gentleman was doing. It seems to be more of a by-product of what he participates in,” said Chief Russell Tarr.
Tarr also said the investigation could take months due to the fact that no one was hurt and no criminal activity as of now, meaning it could be months before the public knows what exactly that material was.
Residents in the area said they were concerned with what happened Monday night.
One residents said the detonation was so loud that it turned off her wireless internet connection, and she had to call her carrier to fix it.
The superintendent of the Moberly school district said they were made aware of the situation and said police were great to keep them updated, and they were ready to take the necessary steps if needed.
