Columbia teen sentenced to probation following deadly crash

A Columbia teenager was sentenced Friday for her role in a deadly crash that killed a pedestrian and seriously injured another.

Ashley Moore, 18, was found guilty in January of careless and imprudent driving, a misdemeanor.

Moore was sentenced to 6 months, but it was suspended and she was put on two years of unsupervised probation, along with 40 hours of community service.

Columbia Police said Moore failed to stay in a single lane of traffic, causing her to swerve and lose control of her car.

She hit two pedestrians walking along Rangeline. Dianna Barney, 44, was pronounced dead at University Hospital.

Moore initially told police that she swerved to avoid a second vehicle, but police later found no evidence of another car.

“Ms. Moore will forever remember the events of that day, and will never forget the person who lost her life because of something beyond Ms. Moore’s control. Her prayers and thoughts will always be with her and her family,” Moore said in a statement through her lawyer.
