Very Cold Night Ahead

An arctic high will settle across central Iowa tonight, bringing very cold temperatures to Mid-Missouri. Winds will be from the northwest from 8-15 in the afternoon, becoming light under 10 mph overnight. Wind chills will fall below 10 as early as 7PM tonight, dipping to 0 by 1-2AM. Wind chills will fall from -2 to -3 along I-70. Areas north of I-70 could see wind chills as low as -5. While a Wind Chill Advisory likely won’t be issued, we have not had many single digit temperatures so far this Winter season. In fact, only three nights have we dipped to the single digits. The morning of January 10 and 17, we dipped to 3, and the morning of January 18, we dipped to 0. Temperatures will fall from 2 in Macon to 7 in Columbia, and 8 closer to the Lake of the Ozarks. When wind chills are from -5 to 0, frostbite can occur within 30 minutes. Wind chills will likely be sub zero north of I-70 through 8AM Saturday morning.
