Student journalist reacts to MU professor’s first public interview

On Thursday, ABC 17 News reached out to all sides of the Melissa Click story.

On Wednesday, ABC 17 brought Click’s first ever television interview since the video of her confronting a student journalist went viral.

We spoke to the student in that confrontation, Mark Scheirbecker, for his reaction to our interview.

Schierbecker told ABC 17 he thought Click was sincere and candid in the interview.

However, he said there were moments where he felt she held back a bit.

Months ago, Schierbecker said he met with Click asking for an apology, but back then he felt it was insincere.

Thursday, he changed his tone and said he’s no longer directing any anger toward her.

“This isn’t a Melissa Click issue. She’s a small part of a systemic problem on campuses around the nation where free speech is being attacked,” said Schierbecker.

Schierbecker said the confrontation between him and Click wasn’t the only scuffle she was involved in that day.

“A scrum of reporters came up to her and asked for an interview to Melissa Click and this student and she turned them down and laid hands on this man’s camera,” Schierbecker said. “If she’s going to continue with the narrative that this is just between me and her… That’s not true.”
