Suspects on the loose after armed burglary, confrontation in Columbia
Police responded to reports of a first-degree burglary Tuesday morning in south Columbia.
It happened around 7 a.m. in the 5000 block of Tessa Way, off Old Plank Road, before Providence turns into Route K.
Sergeant Mike Youtsey tells ABC 17 News people were in the house when the possible suspects came in the back.
ABC17 News spoke with a resident of the house who said he was asleep in his room but had forgotten to lock the door when the suspect came in. The resident said he chased the suspect outside and a confrontation ensued.
Youtsey said if the house were empty, this would have been considered second-degree burglary.
Officials have confirmed a handgun was involved. They, along with the resident, confirmed the suspect pulled a gun during their confrontation.
The suspect ran to a dark blue car and it drove away, but the resident said the suspect left his glasses and came back a while later to retrieve them.
When the suspect came back, the resident said he was with two other men in a different car.
The resident said he smashed a back window on a white car as it drove off.
