Severe storm threat Saturday, heavy rain, flooding

Rain will increase from south to north Saturday as a warm front lifts north of I-44. Rain will become more steady and heavy at times from the afternoon through the evening with possible thunderstorms.

Ahead of a strong area of low pressure we will have strong wind shear south of I-70 Saturday afternoon and ample moisture. Although instability will be low, we can’t rule out isolated severe storms with the best chance from HWY 54 south to the I-44corridor late in the day. If storms strengthen, damaging straight line winds of 60 mph or greater are possible along with an isolated tornado.

Flooding will become a greater concern as periods of rain continue through Monday. Heavy rain is expected from Saturday afternoon, spreading north of I-70 then pulling back to the southeast during the day Sunday. The rain will increase again Sunday night through Monday as a strong low pressure area moves across Missouri. Total rainfall amounts of 2-7″ area expected across Mid-Missouri with the highest totals near the I-44 corridor by Monday evening.

Travelers are urged to use caution when traveling and watch for flooding. You can check the latest road conditions here. Also, wintry weather is possible Sunday into Monday, depending on the track of the storm system. Watch for updates on potential ice and snow at abc17news.com and on our ABC17 Stormtrack Weather App.
