White Christmas probability in Mid-Missouri

The probability of a white Christmas in Mid-Missouri is low, coming in at a 10 to 25 percent chance. The chance of measurable snow on the ground for Christmas happens about once every four to five years.

Looking at records from the Columbia Regional Airport, the last time we had a white Christmas was in 2010 when we got 6 inches on Christmas Eve and a trace of snow on Christmas. We had 5 inches on the ground back in 2002 and 3 inches in 2000. The most snow on Christmas occurred in 1915 with 10 inches on the ground.

Northern Missouri has a better chance of a white Christmas with a 25 to 40 percent chance while in southern Missouri, it’s a 10 percent chance or less.

Looking at the latest forecast data for Christmas this year, it looks unlikely we will have snow on the ground but rain is possible as above normal temperatures continue. Please check the latest ABC17 Stormtrack forecast as we get closer to Christmas for updates and more specific information.
