Water service restored after water main break

Columbia Water and Light says water service has now been restored after a water main break Thursday morning.

The repairs were completed by 1:30 Thursday afternoon. The 42 commercial customers affected are now under a precautionary boil order until mid-afternoon Friday.

Water and Light tells ABC 17 customers not affected, but nearby the break, may see their water is a bit cloudy. It says when lines are flushed in repairs like this, sediment can be stirred up outside of the area. Water and Light says if you are experiencing this, you should let your water run until it is clear.

Thursday morning the streets flooded on the northeast corner of Nifong Blvd. and Buttonwood Drive after a water main break.

Columbia Water and Light confirmed the water main break to ABC17 and said a private contractor dug into an 8 inch line.

We’re told this is a major water line in a commercial area. For reference, the size of a water service that goes into house is 5/8 of an inch.

Crews excavated the area to see if they can find out to what extent the pipe is damaged. Connie Kacprowicz with Columbia Water and Light said crews will have to cut out a piece of the pipe and replace it because the damage was so severe.

There are mainly businesses in the area. As of now, Columbia Water and Light does not know exactly how many are served by that 8 inch line.
