Fulton shooting suspect in custody

The suspect in a Monday shooting on Grand Avenue in Fulton has been taken into custody.

ABC 17 News confirmed Ladeigh Cowans, 23, was taken into custody Thursday night at 9:20 p.m. in Fulton after officers served a search warrant in the 4700 block of Ebersole Loop.

Cowens is charged with four felonies including assault, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and tampering with a witness.

Police said they were called just after 5:00 Monday to the 700 block of Grand Avenue. They said they had gotten information that a man had been shot and suffered multiple injuries.

Police were seen putting up crime scene tape around a house at the scene at 6:20 p.m. Monday and schools in the area were temporarily put on lockdown following the shooting. Officers found two shotgun shells near the home.

“The shooter was saw to have run I think to the northeast,” Fulton Police Chief Steve Myers said. “We did at that time lock down Missouri School for the Deaf as well as Bush School and the Fulton Middle School and the YMCA.”

Police said the victim was 33-year-old Markus Berry. They said emergency crews took Berry to a local hospital for treatment. Berry was in good condition Thursday night, according to University Hospital officials.

“We do not have a motive at this point,” Myers said. “Detectives are working as we speak to determine a motive and to gather some other information.

Cowans pleaded guilty to a shooting that happened in Columbia in November 2011. Cowans threatened his ex-girlfriend with a gun and shot at a home multiple times, according to court documents. He was sentenced to seven years in prison and released early. He also pleaded guilty to felony drug charges in 2012.
