Alcohol, drugs, speed likely factors in August deadly crash in Holts Summit

A crash report indicates alcohol, drugs and speed were likely factors in an August deadly crash in Holts Summit.

On Wednesday ABC 17 News got the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s crash report on the wreck through an open records request.

Three teens and a young woman were killed in the car crash in Holts Summit back on August 1st.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol said it happened minutes before midnight on Highway 54, one mile west of Center Street.

The crash report said 27-year-old Kathryn Zavoral from Jefferson City was driving westbound in the eastbound lanes of Highway 54 when she hit another vehicle head-on.

The impact killed all three people in the second car including 17-year-old Miriah McDaniel, 13-year-old Elizabeth Moses and 13-year-old Meggan Fowler, all from Holts Summit. Zavoral was also killed in the crash.

The highway patrol said none of the victims were wearing seat belts.

Troopers indicate in the crash report that alcohol, drugs and speed likely contributed to Zavoral’s driving that lead to the head-on crash. Alcohol was not believed to be a factor for the occupants of the second vehicle.

One witness statement listed in the crash report estimated Zavoral was traveling more than 130 miles per hour at the time of the crash. Another witness also estimated Zavoral was going more than 100 miles an hour prior to the crash.

A witness also noted seeing a police car with its lights flashing in the westbound lanes of Highway 54 before seeing Zavoral’s vehicle traveling the wrong way towards him in the eastbound lanes. A third witness statement said that Zavoral was flashing her headlights while traveling the wrong way down the road.
