Mizzou’s offense continues to stall as Vanderbilt beats MU 10-3

With each passing week in October, Mizzou’s season goals crept lower and lower.

With Saturday’s 10-3 loss to Vanderbilt, the Tigers are in danger of missing out of a bowl game in 2015, which hardly anyone saw coming before the season.

Missouri’s futile offense could not help their elite defense, as the Tigers (4-4 overall, 1-4 in SEC play) fell in Nashville to a Vanderbilt team that is considered one of the worst programs in the conference.

Drew Lock went 14-34 for 104 yards. He did not throw a touchdown or an interception. Lock and punter Corey Fatony were Missouri’s leading rushers. Lock had 8 rushing attempts for 39 yards while Corey Fatony ran for 26 yards on a fake punt. Mizzou running back Russell Hansbrough had 8 carries for 12 yards, which led all MU running backs.

Vanderbilt could have put the game away with a late fourth quarter field goal. But Vanderbilt kicker Tommy Openshaw’s field goal attempt hit the right upright. The Tigers took over at the Vanderbilt at their own 20. Lock’s 33-yard run took Missouri into Commodores territory.

On fourth down, Lock threw an incomplete pass intended for Nate Brown. However, the officials called pass interference on the Vandy defense, giving MU new life. Wesley Leftwich’s 17-yard catch brought MU to the Vanderbilt 13 yard line. But the Lock threw four straight incompletions, giving the ball back to the Vanderbilt offense.

According to ESPN, Mizzou is the first SEC team in 19 years to score six points or less in three straight games. The last Mizzou team to accomplish that dreadful feat was the 1937 squad.

The Tigers are off this upcoming week before hosting Mississippi State in a Thursday night tilt (Nov. 5). Mizzou then travels to Arrowhead Stadium to host BYU and then plays one more game at Memorial Stadium on November 21 against Tennessee. Missouri ends the season at Arkansas on November 27.
