Arrest made after shots fired in Columbia overnight

Just before 2 o’clock Saturday morning, Columbia Police responded to the area of Rangeline Street and Business Loop 70 East for reports of shots heard.

Authorities found shell casings in the area.

“I didn’t hear it last night, which I’m surprised by because usually when I do hear it I wake up, check on my children and make sure they’re okay, which they usually are, but you never know,” said Philandra Robinson, who has lived near the Rangeline-Business Loop intersection for almost two years.

Robinson said she hears gunfire near her home too often.

“I do have kids, so it concerns me,” she said. “It’s been ongoing for a while now since I’ve been here.”

Witnesses were able to provide officers with a suspect vehicle description, which was later located at Club Vogue also on Business Loop 70 East.

Officers stopped the vehicle and found a firearm under the driver’s seat. The driver was identified as Steven Lee Shelton, 28, of Columbia and is a convicted felon.

The shell casings officers found on scene matched the cartridges in the gun found under Shelton’s seat.

“I think it’s just after the clubs close there’s really not a whole lot to do, so people are just trying to find stuff to do and that’s usually when trouble happens,” Robinson said.

Shelton is facing possible charges of Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Unlawfully Possessing a Concealed Firearm.

Another person was in the car with Shelton, but was released at the scene.

There were no reports of injuries or property damage from the shots fired.

Shelton has bonded out of the Boone County Jail.
