Dedication held for $1.2 million food pantry

A dedication was held for the new food pantry in Mexico Sunday.

The Laura Miller George Help Center and Atkins place on Fairground Street opened in July and started serving residents right away.

The ceremony was held at 2:00 p.m. for the $1.2 million facility. The 15,000 square-foot building includes space for food storage, a thrift store and offices.

Plans to open the center started a few years ago, according to Executive Director Gary Jones.

“It’s been a three year process going from a dream that the community had to the point of putting this facility up,” Jones said.

The number of families served in the area has doubled since the facility has opened, Jones said.
