Safety officials say space heaters can pose danger

As winter approaches, public safety officials are reminding home owners about the dangers of space heaters and other supplementary heating devices.

The Missouri State Fire Marshal’s Office reports more than 25,000 fires every year are started by heating appliances, resulting in more than 300 deaths.

Officials say there are some easy steps to keep your family and your home safe.

Always use a smoke alarm/carbon monoxide alarm whenever using a space heater. Turn off portable heaters whenever leaving the room or going to bed. Keep anything that can burn at least 3feet away from heating equipment. The 3-foot safety zone includes furniture, drapesand electronics – anything that can burn. The department also says it’s important to have an escape plan for the household.
