Columbia residents concerned with trash overflow at apartment complex

A Columbia Public Works Solid Waste supervisor inspected an apartment complex at 2707 Quail Drive Wednesday.

Columbia residents living at the complex told Abc 17 they are fed up with trash piling up outside their apartment and flowing into the parking lot.

New owners took over the apartment complex in July and raised the rent, causing many residents to move out and throw their trash in the lot, residents said.

A solid waste supervisor looked at the property to see if the health department needed to be notified of any issues, Steven Sapp with Columbia Public Works said. Public works is also working the property management, Modern Property Groups, to get the trash picked up as soon as possible, Sapp said.

The overflowing trash is a violation of city code,Leigh Britt with Columbia Neighborhood Services said. Britt said an inspector with neighborhood services will also look at the property.

But the complex at Quail Drive is not the only place dealing with the issue, according to Sapp and Britt. It is a city wide problem this time of year, due to so many people moving in a short period of time.

Neighborhood services has looked into what it can do to help lessen the issue, possibly adding more dumpsters, Britt said.
