Officials remind residents of dangerously hot weather as Boone County’s fair winds down

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Boone County Fire Protection District is reminding fair goers and all those looking to go outdoors in the next week of the dangers during hot temperatures.

Ryan Benedict, Firefighter with the protection district, says he was at the fair every day and has only seen a couple of fair goers needing medical assistance after getting too hot.

Benedict said the Boone County Fire Protection District had, "a staff of at least two EMT’s at all times from when gates are open here until they close,” to assist with any heat related illnesses.

The firefighter had multiple recommendations for residents venturing out into the heat saying, "The biggest thing is to stay hydrated and pay attention to your body. When you know you’re going to go to an event like this and it’s going to be hot and there’s really not a lot of cool places to duck off into just make sure you’re drinking a lot of water and you’re paying attention to yourself. eat drink water, wear light layers of clothing.”

Benedict also says his crew had sunscreen available throughout the fair and recommends any resident spending a prolonged amount of time outdoors, wears and reapplies sunscreen.
