Man charged with assault on a law enforcement officer in Jefferson City

A man was arrested Friday after threatening to commit suicide and attacking police officers as well as St. Mary’s Hospital staff.

Police responded to the Zip Stop convenience store at 910 Fairgrounds Road in Jefferson City Friday night for a call for a disturbance.

When officers arrived, they took Michael Clanahan into custody after he told a family member he wanted to die by jumping off the Missouri River Bridge and having police shoot him.

According to court documents, Clanahan has been diagnosed as bipolar and is off his medication.

Clanahan was taken to St. Mary’s Hospital for evaluation. While he was there, he kicked one police officer, and tried to bite another.

He also kicked two people on the medical staff and said he would rape a police officer’s wife, kidnap the officer’s child, and kill the officer.

Clanahan also said he would kill and commit arson against his own family member.

Clanahan admitted he has HIV-AIDs and recklessly tried to expose three medical staff members and a police officer by coughing and spitting on them.

Clanahan has prior convictions for assaulting law enforcement officers and medical staff.

Clanahan is currently in the University of Missouri Psychiatric Center.
