UPDATE: Man charged for shooting Whiteman Air Force base member

The man Johnson County deputies took into custody this weekend is now charged for shooting and killing a serviceman at Whiteman Air Force Base.

An indictment filed Monday said that Dominic Sacco shot 22-year-old Senior Airman John Bottom Saturday morning at a residence near Warrensburg. Prosecutor Rob Russell charged Sacco for unlawful use of a weapon, a class A felony with a punishment between 10 and 30 years in prison.

The Johnson County Sheriff Office’s probable cause statement said a deputy arrived at the residence just before 5 a.m. Inside the place, the deputy found Bottom with a gunshot wound to his head.

The statement said Bottom was at the home with Sacco and two other friends. One of the friends told investigators he and Sacco had their handguns out while drinking alcohol. The friend said Sacco chambered a round in a Glock 19 9mm, aimed and fired at Bottom.

Sacco is in the Johnson County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond.

Whiteman Air Force Base announced Bottom’s death Sunday afternoon.

“We have lost a valued member of Team Whiteman,” Brigadier General Glen VanHerck said in a news release. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, loved ones, and all of Team Whiteman during this difficult time.”

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday Bottom was shot by “a friend and acquaintance” at a residence just outside Warrensburg. Deputies and EMS arrived shortly before 5 a.m. Saturday after someone at the residence called 9-1-1. An ambulance took Bottom to a hospital in Kansas City.

Bottom served in the 509th Security Forces Squadron. Lt. Matthew Van Wagenen, the base’s spokesman, did not say how long Bottom had served in the Air Force.
