Heavy rain and severe storm threat

Periods of showers and t-storms are expected through early Monday as a storm system winds up over the Central Plains and slowly moves east. Some of these storms will be capable of producing heavy rain. There is the potential of 1″ to 2.5″ total rainfall Thursday through Sunday with highest amounts west of HWY 63.

The atmosphere is forecast to become more unstable Thursday through Sunday but wind shear is low through Saturday. At this time, severe storms are not expected through Saturday. However, a few strong storms with heavy rain and strong, gusty winds can’t be ruled out, especially if we get enough afternoon sunshine.

A surface low pressure area is forecast to move into northwestern Missouri Sunday night with a trailing cold front through western Missouri. Out ahead of this system, we will be in a warm, moist unstable air mass along with moderate wind shear. Storms forming ahead of the cold front Sunday afternoon could become severe with damaging wind and large hail the main threats along with a low tornado threat through Sunday evening.
