Four inmates test positive for scabies at Vandalia prison

ABC 17 News first reported last week almost 70 prisoners were being treated for scabies at a women’s prison in Audrain County.

Last week, ABC 17 confirmed three inmates tested positive for the contagious skin mite at the Women’s Eastern Reception, Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Vandalia.

On Friday, officials at the Missouri Department of Corrections confirmed a fourth inmate has tested positive for the condition.

David Owen with MDC said less than 50 offenders have a rash that is consistent with a scabies rash, and they’re also being treated.

As a precaution, any inmates that have come in contact with anyone who has tested positive for scabies or has a similar rash are also getting treatment.

Other offenders and staff members are being monitored and checked for the condition.

All housing units and other buildings have been cleaned and sanitized, and clothing and linens will be regularly laundered.

WERDCC will have normal visiting hours this weekend.
