Friday night- Saturday Winter Storm Update

Moisture will increase quickly Friday evening, moving into below freezing temperatures at the surface with a layer of warmer air aloft. The warmer air will cause precipitation to fall as sleet and freezing rain through 9 p.m., transitioning to snow from north of I-70 to the south through the night.

As rain falls onto the below freezing surfaces, ice will accumulate causing slick roads. Also, pockets of heavy sleet are possible during the evening before we transition to mainly freezing rain. A glaze of ice is possible north of I-70 before precipitation changes to snow but increases to a tenth of an inch of ice near I-70 and higher amounts toward the southeast where pockets of three tenths of an inch of ice can’t be ruled out.

Snow will spread to the south overnight with highest accumulations in a narrow band near HWY 24 where pockets of 5″ are possible, dropping to an inch near I-70 and less than an inch south. Snow will end by mid-morning Saturday.
