Driving tips, prepping your car for winter

An important step in staying safe this winter season is to winterize your vehicle. There are multiple items that should be checked every year.

First, have your car’s battery and charging system checked, as the cold weather is harsh on these.

Be sure to have your brakes checked, and clean, flush, and replace antifreeze in your cooling system.

This should be done at least every two years.

Windshield wipers should be replaced every six months, so consider winter wiper blades and cold weather washer fluid.

Check your tire tread and pressure regularly. To do this, place a quarter into the grooves. Part of Washington’s head should be covered.

You can check your vehicle owner’s manual to find the correct tire pressure for your vehicle.

You should also have your exhaust system checked for potential carbon monoxide leaks. This is especially dangerous in the winter because we often let our cars warm up before driving and drive with the windows up.

Check to be sure your heaters and defrosters are working well.

Last, give your headlights a visual inspection.

Check that your headlights are aimed properly and that your hazard lights are working.

You should also keep a winter storm kit in your car this winter in case you become stuck or stranded. This should include things such as an extra blanket, a flashlight, a few water bottles, and sand.

Before you drive this winter, though, remember that the best way to stay safe during winter weather is to stay home and avoid driving.
