Recap: Winter 2013-2014

ABC 17 Stormtrack took a look at the past 10 past winters and compared the temperatures and snowfall to what is typical. Last year we picked up 18″ of snow, which average for a winter in Mid-Missouri. But, we remember the frigid temperatures that made the winter of 2013-2014 the 7th coldest on record!

Looking at the past 10 winters, in winter 2010-2011, we picked up well above average snowfall at 53″, and again in the winter of 2012-2013 we picked up 35.”

Last winter, even without snowfall records, the cold brought many problems. We even broke a few overnight lows in February.

Breaking down the entire winter, we had just under 30 days of temperatures below freezing! With the coldest date January 6th. Columbia Regional had a daytime high temperature of zero with overnight low temperatures in the negatives, and a wind chill of -32 at 7 a.m. The system responsible for the blustery and bitter air brought down 3-9″ of total snowfall across Mid-Missouri counties. The low pressure system moved from the southern Plains into the region Saturday and Sunday, January 4 and 5. The low tracked across northern Arkansas during the morning hours on Sunday, bringing the heaviest bands of snow near Interstate 44, where 7-12″ of snow fell. The arctic air in combination with the moisture transport from the Gulf provided ingredients that were key for heavy snow. Gusty northwest winds of 20-35 mph caused significant blowing and drifting of snow throughout the area. Temperatures then fell throughout the day into the teens, with wind chills hitting the single digits above and below zero.

The winter storm dumped over 5″ of snow in southern Columbia, 8″ in Jefferson City, and at the lake at Osage Beach, 8.5.” and our last measurable snowfall in March was on the 3rd where we had .50″ of snow recorded.
