New charges filed against accused killer of Callaway Co. boy

The man accused in the shooting death of a 6-year-old Callaway County boy last week is facing new charges Friday.

27-year-old Scott Willet was charged last week with first degree murder after admitting to shooting Dayne Hathman in Callaway County last Thursday.

Willet was charged Friday with tampering with physical evidence, receiving stolen property, and 1st degree tampering with a motor vehicle.

Bond was originally set at $1 million for Willet, but Friday a judge ruled he would now have no bond, citing Willet was a threat to public safety.

According to a probable cause statement, when law enforcement investigated the murder scene last week, they determined evidence had been tampered with before they arrived.

Officers found the young boy’s body hidden in a container, spent shell casings in a drawer, and blood from Hathman’s injuries being washed away in the bathtub.

Hathman’s mother, Ladaynea Simpson, also reported her car missing while authorities were still searching for him.

Simpson’s car was found in Pettis County where authorities also found Willet on Thursday morning.

They also found a stolen Hi-Point .40 caliber handgun belonging to Willet’s father, Glen Willet. Glen Willet did report the gun stolen from Boone County.

Willet admitted to stealing the gun, tampering with evidence, and stealing Simpson’s car in his original interview with deputies.

Last Friday, August 29, the Callaway County Jail got a call from an unknown person who asked about the bonding process for Willet, and what form of payment the jail would accept.

Willet was interviewed by the Missouri Board of Probation and Parole Wednesday, where he said if he posted bond he would flee and not appear in court. Willet said, “I got places I can hide.”
