Fulton breaks ground on new animal shelter

The City of Fulton broke ground on a new animal shelter Monday morning.

The site of the new shelter will be on Industrial Drive between Business 54 andWestminster Avenue.

The current shelter is a former pool and bath house where space is limited.

“This is long overdue,” said Fulton Mayor, LeRoy Benton.

The new shelter will have twice the space of the current Garrett Animal Shelter,and will have an examination room, separate quarantine areas, and a lobby for visitors.

“We are really looking forward to having lots of room, having new, updated equipment to work with, having space for the animals, and having more places for the public to interact with the animals,” said Animal Control Supervisor, Tina Barnes.

Nearly $230,000 of the $300,000 cost to build the new shelter was raised through private donations.

The City will finance the remaining costs.
