Police make an arrest in Columbia shooting

Columbia police have made an arrest in a Sunday night shooting that sent two to the hospital.

Monday night police arrested Eugenia Dyer, 36, of Columbia for the shooting in the 5000 block of Rice Road.

Just after 10 p.m. Sunday officers were called to a local hospital in reference to two male gunshot victims.

Police identify the victims as Courteniz Logan, 30, and Jermaine Wilson, 30, both of Columbia.

They were brought to the hospital in a private vehicle.

Investigators say the shooting happened during a disturbance.

The victims are stable, but details on their injuries are unclear.

ABC 17’s Heather Hourigan went out to Rice Road Monday to talk with neighbors to learn how safe they feel in their neighborhood.

Some neighbors thought their street was fine while a few would like to see more police patrolling.

“There is not extra patrol. There are officers that are assigned to that beat though,” said Latisha Stroer with the Columbia Police Department.

Michael Trapp from the Mayor’s Task Force on Community Violence told ABC 17 News that it’s important to know crime is done by people not the area.

“What geography is really showing is the social networks, and the social networks are what matter. Even if you live within that geographic area that has higher 911 calls if you are not involved in that kind of lifestyle you are no more likely to be a victim if you live in a low crime area,” said Trapp.

He told ABC 17 News that if you know someone that was a victim of homicide you are 100 times more likely to be a victim yourself.

“How i think of crime is that it’s less of an intermediate crisis as it tends to be treated. Its more like a chronic disease it needs ongoing management,” said Trapp.
