University of Missouri Board of Curators approve outside legal counsel to review Menu Courey case

More than nine hours after UM System President Time Wolfe addressed the media Wednesday, the UM Board of Curators approved Wolfe’s recommendation to hire outside legal counsel to review matters related to the Sasha Menu Courey case.

This stems from an ESPN report that claimed the University of Missouri did not investigate an alleged sexual assault against swimmer Sasha Menu Courey.

The firm selected by the board will be independent from the University and will review matters related to how the case was handled.

“The board wants to take an independent look at what happened here,” University of Missouri Board of Curators Chair Don Downing said in a statement. “Separately, our chancellors are promptly reviewing their campus policies and procedures concerning the prevention and reporting of sexual assaults and availability of mental health services, and President Wolfe has rightly committed to devoting additional resources to the extent those policies and procedures are found to be lacking.”

The Board’s next step will be to select a firm. Once the firm is selected, they will investigate and report their findings to the Board no later than April 11.
