Jefferson City School District sets May 27 end date
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Jefferson City School District will forgive several of its snow day make-up dates to end the school year earlier.
JC Schools Superintendent Larry Linthacum said in a letter to school families sent Monday morning that the year will end May 27. That day will include a three-hour early release. Ending school on May 27 will allow the district to stay above the state minimum for hours and "give our students and staff an opportunity to take a respite from the classroom as they prepare for summer school and their return to class this fall," Linthacum wrote.
JC Schools maintained in-person instruction throughout the school year while many districts including Columbia Public Schools had periods of virtual learning when coronavirus cases were high. Some classes and entire school buildings had to learn online for brief periods because of quarantines though. Linthacum said the district was one of teh largest in the state to stay in-person all year.
The district has reported 290 coronavirus cases in students and another 213 in staff this school year. Another 548 students were deemed close contacts of infected people during the school year.
The district reported only two active student cases and no active staff cases as of Sunday.
