Columbia man charged in deadly crash appears in court

A man charged in a deadly Columbia car accident appeared in court Monday.

Spencer Gordon, 21, is charged with involuntary manslaughter and two counts of second-degree assault.

Investigators say he was driving drunk on Providence Road in Dec. 2012 when he crashed into a truck.

Police say Gordon’s car crossed the median near Research Park Drive and hit a truck, causing the truck to flip several times.

The accident killed a passenger in the truck, 24-year-old Michelle Morrow, and injured two other people. One of those injured, Michael Tufts, is still recovering from injuries sustained in the crash.

In court, a judge delayed Gordon’s trial, which was scheduled to begin Dec. 10. Attorneys for both sides are working to set a new date. The trial is expected to last three-to-four days.
