Ameren Missouri warns of phone scam

Ameren Missouri is warning Mid-Missourians against scammers calling, claiming to be Ameren and threatening to disconnect electric services unless payment is given immediately.

These scammers are asking for banking and personal information.

They are calling people on their cellphones, at the office and at home telling them they need to pay up or their electricity will be shut off.

Ameren says this is just not something it would do.

“Just be aware that Ameren doesn’t typically make calls to the public. If you do have a question call us,” said Lana Tramell of Ameren Missouri.

Captain Doug Shoemaker of the Jefferson City Police Departments says the phone number they are calling from can be a big indicator if the call is legit.

“When it’s a number that may be unlisted or shows up as um an blocked number, or out of state number, particularly when it’s maybe a local company that’s a sign that something is definitely not right.”

Ameren says these type of scams tend to happen around the holidays.

It says to call 1-800-552-7583 if you have any questions.
