Tours canceled at Missouri State Pennitentiary through Oct. 2

Tours at the former Missouri State Penitentiary in Jefferson City have been canceled until October 2.

According to an official post on the historic site’s webpage, “the property owners are assessing some site issues in the coming days” due to “unforeseen circumstances.”

The message, posted this week, says anyone currently holding a ticket through Oct. 2 will be contacted about a refund or a voucher for a future tour.

Tours at the prison are scheduled for Fridays and Saturdays through November, with occasional dates during the week. Most remaining tours were sold out Saturday night.

The Missouri State Penitentiary received its first inmate in 1836 and closed in 2004. At that time, it was the oldest prison west of the Mississippi River.
