Columbia man sentenced in heroin death

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) – A Columbia man has been sentenced for distributing heroin that caused the death of another man last year.

Prosecutors say 37-year-old Ellison Lee Hutchinson Jr. was sentenced Thursday to 20 years in federal prison without parole. He was also ordered to pay about $1,700 in restitution to for the funeral costs of Maximillion Shackelford, who died in January 2012 after using the heroin.

Officers who examined Shackelford’s cell phone found he had made arrangements the day he died to meet Hutchison.

Prosecutors say Hutchison eventually admitted that he sold Shackelford a quarter gram of heroin for $45.
