Columbia man arrested for allegedly shooting at victim during assault

One man is behind bars for an alleged assault with a gun Saturday afternoon.

The Boone County Sheriff’s Department says Matthew Akins, 24, of Columbia, went to the victim’s home in the 7600 block of North Highway VV and started a verbal argument.

The victim and witnesses say the argument escalated and Akins pointed a handgun at the victim. Then as he was leaving the home, Akins reportedly fired a shot at the victim. The shot missed the victim and hit the ground.

Deputies arrested Akins for first-degree assault, armed criminal action and two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

He remains in the Boone County Jail with a bond to bet set.
