Capital Mall development plans unveiled
Plans are moving ahead for the Capital Mall in Jefferson City and most city leaders appear to be on board.
Mall management has plans to improve the interior and exterior of the building in hopes of attracting more national retailers.
The mall is working with the city to create a community improvement district. This CID would allow the mall to get a portion of the profits of the stores on its property through an additional tax. That money would then go toward mall improvements.
“I think people in Jefferson City really want to have a viable mall option and this will help us do that,” Jefferson City city administrator Nathan Nickolaus said. “It will help bring a lot of retail back to Jefferson City.”
Nickolaus said the city wants the mall to continue to succeed because it is an important source of income.
“The mall’s obviously a huge generator of property tax and sales tax and so we are very much invested in them succeeding,” he said.
Mall management will present plans to the City Council on Tuesday, but is not expected vote on the plans.
