Assistant News Director

JOB DESCRIPTION: The ASSISTANT NEWS DIRECTOR’S duties will include supervising the day-to-day night side operations of a 35-person news department. This includes approval of news rundowns, oversight of reporters, management of resources and personnel, assisting late night producer with 90 minutes of news and work on projects as assigned. In the absence of the news director, the position will be in charge of the newsroom. The successful candidate will be expected to function within the framework of a research-driven news department that emphasizes source cultivation, enterprising and breaking news. Employee must have the flexibility to work in the modern newsroom and will be expected to work in all platforms including web, mobile and social media.

SKILLS: The right candidate must be a good leader who has good rapport with staff. He or she should have good organizational skills and superior news judgment. He/she will need to be innovative and a strategic thinker. The candidate must work well under pressure, foster cooperation in a stressful setting and meet strict deadlines.

HOURS/SCHEDULE: This is a full-time position, scheduled Monday through Friday from 2:00pm – 11:00pm with flexibility required by the employee.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE: A college degree in journalism, communication or a related field is desired. Three to five years-experience in television news management in producing or a similar role is preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: The position will require operation of a company vehicle or a personal vehicle for business use. Candidate must pass a drug test, background check, and MVR check.
