University of Missouri installing new emergency alarms

The University of Missouri is adding one more safety device on campus to help warn students of any danger.

The university is installing 225 emergency alarms in high-traffic areas of campus buildings. Each unit costs $750, with funding coming from the campus facilities budget.

“We heard about other universities using it so we felt that it was one more way to let students know there was an emergency on campus,” said university spokesperson Karlan Seville.

The alarm will alert students through a strobe light, speaker, sirenand a display screen.The alerts will also pop up on campus computer screens.

Despite the new warning system, students will still get alerts on their phones, email and via the university’s social media sites.

Kyle Nelson, a senior at MU, is excited about the new system.

“I think it will be very beneficial, especially with the weather problems we have in Missouri,” Nelson said.

The alarm system is connected to the National Weather Service to alert students to severe weather in the area.
