Housing Authority to renovate aging homes
The Columbia Housing Authority has plans to renovate aging public housing.
Over the course of the next year, the agency will plan to renovating 84 properties in downtown Columbia. Overall, they hope to upgrade nearly 300 properties.
The CEO of the Housing Authority, Phil Steinhaus, says that not only will it improve the quality of life for residents, it will also help reduce area crime.
He says these upgrades are not only just necessary, but even a safety concern.
Some of the apartments have lack of ventilation, carbon monoxide problems, second story windows and double roofs that are fire hazards, and lack of space for appliances.
The renovations will cost $75,000 to $85,000 per apartment.
