Community members gather at McKee Street Park to support shooting victim’s family

Outrage about crime in Columbia hits new levels as another family mourns the loss of a teenager.

About 50 people gathered at McKee Street Park Monday night to support Treveon Marshall’s family.

Someone gunned down Marshall in McKee Street Park late Monday night. He died in the hospital later that night.

Family and community members said they want an end to the violent acts in Columbia.

“We had to come out and show we’re tired of that, losing young black men in the streets,” said Lorenzo Lawson with the Youth Empowerment Zone. “It’s senseless.”

Lawson organized the gathering Monday night.

He urged anyone who knows anything to come forward and to help the police catch the person responsible.

Friends and community members who didn’t even know Treveon Marshall came to help the family.

“I’m here to support Treveon Marshall’s family as they go through this hard time,” Karriona Melson said. “If my brother, son or cousin died, I would be pretty hurt.”

The night ended with a prayer circle.

The family is holding a candlelight vigil Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the McKee Street Park.
